W&L Wrestling Wins Two of Three on Sunday

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team took two of three matches on Sunday afternoon at Doremus Gym to improve to 3-7 overall. 

The Generals defeated West Virginia Tech (36-15) and East Tennessee State (39-12), but fell to Centennial Conference-rival Johns Hopkins (27-18) to drop to 0-5 in the conference standings.

Individually for the Generals, sophomores Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) and Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) all went 3-0 on the day.

At 141 pounds, Campbell began his afternoon with a 3-2 victory over Johns Hopkins first-year Matt Nelson (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln), then posted a win by forfeit against West Virginia Tech.  He finished with an 8-3 decision over ETSU’s Jacob Henley.

Dennis opened with a 6-4 win over JHU sophomore Michael Testa (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) at 157 pounds, then logged a forfeit win at 157 against West Virginia Tech.  He then bumped up to 165 pounds to defeat ETSU’s Austin Collins by fall (1:06).

Ersing competed at 125 pounds and notched forfeit wins against all three opponents.  Junior 165 pounder Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) also registered a pair of wins by forfeit.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it competes in the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Stevens in Hoboken, N.J.  Action is slated to begin at 10:00 am.
