HOBOKEN, N.J. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team closed the first half with seven straight goals in the final 6:35 to produce a 15-7 victory over 23rd-ranked Stevens on Sunday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks (11-4) opened a 3-1 lead in the initial 9:46 of the contest on the strength of two goals from sophomore midfielder Emily Shanklin. The Generals (12-4) began their decisive run at the 6:35 mark of the first half on a goal by first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) off an assist from senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville).
Sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) tied the game at 3-3 at the 5:06 mark with a free position tally, and sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) followed just 19 seconds later with a free position score of her own. Junior attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) gave the Generals a two-goal lead (5-3) at the 4:05 mark, while Castelo notched back-to-back unassisted goals just 33 seconds apart for a 7-3 lead. Shelley completed the run with a free position goal with just seven seconds left in the half, giving W&L an 8-3 lead at the break.
Stevens tallied two of the first three goals of the second half, both scored by sophomore attacker Kyra Bednarski, to cut it to a 9-5 game. However, W&L used a three-goal run that included a pair of scores from junior midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) to push out to a 12-5 lead with 16:45 remaining. Stevens could not challenge from there as the Blue & White claimed its ninth straight win on the season.
W&L held a 24-21 edge in shots and an 11-8 advantage in ground balls. The Generals also won 18 of the 24 draws in the contest.
Shelley finished with three goals and one assist, while Castelo and Peters notched two goals and two assists each. Junior midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's), Collette Murray and Dani Murray chipped in two goals apiece as well. Dani Murray added seven draw controls, as did junior midfielder Rebecca Wellford (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS). Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played a majority of the game in goal, posting eight saves to record the win. Senior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) played the final 6:19 and did not make a save.
Shanklin recorded a team-high three goals to lead the Ducks. Senior attacker Cami Santor chipped in four assists and senior Stephanie Schnelzer played the duration in goal, recording six saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Roanoke for a 12:00 pm contest.
