LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) scored three goals to lead the eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 14-2 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (5-1) opened up the contest with a three goal spurt three minutes into the game. Tucker scored an unassisted goal at the 26:57 mark. She won the ensuing draw and scored a 1:36 later to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. Senior midfielder Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) scored off of a feed from junior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) at 24:24.
St. Mary's (3-4) got on the board at the 19:03 mark, as senior attacker Abbey Harrison scored an unassisted goal to make the score 3-1.
However, W&L closed the first half with an eight-goal run to assume a commanding 11-1 lead at the break. Senior attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) and Castelo each scored two goals and dished out an assist during the spurt. Senior midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley), sophomore midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) and junior midfielder Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place School) each added one goal during the run.
Sophomore midfielder Briana Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and sophomore attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) scored at the 18:37 and 12:57 marks of the second stanza to increase W&L's lead to 13-1. The Generals final goal of the game came from first-year attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) at the 5:58 mark.
Sophomore attacker Allie Collie posted the Seahawks final goal with three seconds remaining off of an assist from Harrison.
For the game, W&L held a 26-16 advantage in shots and a 13-4 edge in draw controls. The Seahawks held a slim 16-13 edge in ground balls.
Tucker's three goals led the Blue and White's offense, while Castelo and Holland chipped in two goals each. Tucker also had eight draw controls and three ground balls.
First-year goalkeeper Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played 30:00 in goal for W&L and stopped three shots. Junior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) saw 17:03 of action and made two saves. Sophomore Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) played 6:36 in goal and did not face a shot, while junior Harleigh Bean (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Episcopal) played the remaining 6:21 and made one save. Sophomore Emma Brown suffered the loss for St. Mary's, playing the entire contest in net and registering seven saves.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to fifth-ranked Catholic at 1:00 pm.
