W&L Women's Lacrosse Tops ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s lacrosse team was picked to repeat as conference champions in the ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals earned 95 poll points, including six first-place votes to lead the poll.  Guilford collected four top nods and 88 tallies to finish second in the voting, while Shenandoah sits third with 82 points. Roanoke College received the final first-place vote to garner 78 points to finish fourth in the poll.

Lynchburg (64), Randolph-Macon (58), Virginia Wesleyan (42), Bridgewater (41), Randolph (24), Sweet Briar (23) and Hollins (10) rounded out the annual survey.

The Blue and White finished the 2013 season with a 10-10 overall record and a 7-3 mark in league play en route to claiming its fourth consecutive league title. W&L earned the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Tournament, but fell to York (Pa.), 13-6, in the first round.

The Generals return three all-conference selections this spring in senior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) and senior defenders Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park) and Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn. / Darien).

Brewster started in 19 games and finished second on the team with 44 points off of 37 goals and seven assists. She also won a team-leading 72 draw controls and caused 21 turnovers en route to garnering Second Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region accolades.

A Second Team All-ODAC honoree, Waxter helped the defense post an 8.80 goals-against average and caused an average of 8.35 turnovers per game. She registered 25 ground balls, 14 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers.

Stone led the team with 57 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers, while starting in 18 contests for the Generals. Her ground ball total also ranked second in the ODAC. She helped lead the defense to four Top-3 conference rankings and was named First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region, First Team VaSID All-State and Third Team All-America for her efforts.

The Generals begin their season on February 15 when they host Christopher Newport for a 1:00 pm contest.
