GRAND LAKE, Colo. – Washington and Lee senior lacrosse player Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) was one of three recipients chosen to receive the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Community Awareness Award, announced on Saturday.
The IWLCA Community Awareness Award is given to those student-athletes who distinguish themselves through outstanding service in their communities. Senior Danielle Russo from Fairfield University and junior Libby Nichols of Philadelphia University also received the honor this year. The three will be recognized at the All-American Banquet on Saturday, May 25 in King of Prussia, Pa.
Barnes finds time to volunteer at the Rockbridge County Free Clinic, Special Olympics of Maryland, Habitat for Humanity, Lighthouse Shelter for Annapolis and the Annapolis Outreach Clinic. The four-year letterwinner is also a founding member of the W&L On-Campus Special Olympics group, beginning her service as a secretary and later serving as the organization's president. A Bonner Scholar, Barnes has contributed over 280 hours to community service this year alone and was selected for the W&L Wink Glasgow Spirit & Sportsmanship Award at the annual athletics award ceremony.
On the field, Barnes has seen action in 55 career games as an attacker for the Generals. She has collected 28 points on 22 goals and six assists, 70 draw controls and 19 ground balls.
