W&L Women's Lacrosse Edges Lynchburg, 12-10, in Overtime

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored two goals in overtime while holding Lynchburg scoreless to claim a 12-10 victory on Saturday at Shellenberger Field. 

After LC (5-5, 2-3) scored a game-tying goal with 36 seconds left in regulation, the game entered overtime where first-year attackers Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Annie Murphy (Short Hills, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) each registered a goal for the win.

W&L (5-6, 5-1) opened the contest's scoring with two goals from junior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) by the 22:02 mark (2-0). The Hornets answered back with two tallies to tie the game at 2-2 with 16:14 on the clock. Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) found the back of the net with an unassisted goal to pull the Generals ahead once again, 3-2. 

Junior midfielder Meredith Lavin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored another for W&L off a free position shot at 13:21 (4-2), but LC fought back with four straight goals to close out the period with a 6-4 lead.

The Blue and White tied the game at 6-6 with a pair of tallies just 5:04 into the second half. However, LC junior midfielder Bri Slate knocked off three consecutive goals to push the Hornets ahead, 9-6, at 19:47. The Generals answered back with a trio of goals over the next 10:03, eliminating their deficit with 9:44 left in regulation (9-9). 

Klein scored her fourth goal of the game with just 1:01 remaining to give W&L a 10-9 advantage. Slate then notched the unassisted tally for LC with 36 ticks on the clock to cause the overtime.

The Generals held an advantage in both shots, 30-20, and draw controls, 14-12, in the game. 

In goal for the Blue and White was sophomore Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who collected six saves and 10 goals-against in 66 minutes. Sophomore Hailey Bossert recorded eight saves and 12 goals-against while spending the entire contest in the cage for the Hornets.

Klein paced the Generals' with four goals, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Brewster registered a pair of goals to go along with eight draw controls and two ground balls, and junior attacker Katie Hagen (West Chester, Pa./Notre Dame) tallied two goals and two assists. 

For LC, Slate led all scoring with four goals and senior attacker Kendall Adkin collected three tallies. Senior midfielder Julie Will added one goal, five draw controls, and a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers.

W&L returns to the field on Wednesday when it travels to Shenandoah for a 7:00 pm contest.
