W&L Women's Lacrosse Stings the Yellow Jackets, 13-7
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team took a 7-2 lead into halftime en route to defeating Randolph-Macon, 13-7, on Wednesday at Watt Field.
The Generals jumped out to a 3-0 advantage by the 20:43 mark. Senior midfielder Emily Lynch (St. Inigoes, Md./Leonardtown) notched R-MC's (8-1, 3-1) first goal at 19:16, but first-year attacker Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) answered with W&L's (4-6, 4-1) fourth tally with 15:37 left in the first half to push the lead back to three (4-1).
First-year midfielder Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored once more for the Yellow Jackets at the 10:20 mark, but the Generals knocked off three straight goals to end the period and enter halftime with the 7-2 advantage.
After first-year midfielder Amelia Murcott (Madison, N.J./Madison) opened the second-half scoring at 29:04, R-MC first-year attacker Shannon Jamieson (Cypress, Texas/Cypress-Woods) brought the deficit to four, 8-4, with two goals by 16:47. W&L then found the back of the net twice more in the next four minutes (10-4), and held a steady lead for the remainder of the contest to cruise to the 13-7 victory.
In goal for the Blue and White was sophomore Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who collected 10 saves and seven goals-against in 60 minutes of action. Senior Nicole Woodworth (Culpepper, Va./Eastern View) spent the entire game in the cage for the Yellow Jackets, stopping 18 shots and recording 13 goals-against.
W&L held an advantage in both shots (39-24) and draw controls (14-8) in the game.
Junior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) paced the Generals' scoring with three goals and one assist, while also claiming five draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Taglienti, Murcott and first-year attacker Annie Murphy (Short Hills, N.J./Lawrenceville School) each recorded a pair of goals. On the defensive end, junior Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) picked up four ground balls and two caused turnovers and junior Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) tallied three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
For Randolph-Macon, Jamieson led the team with three goals. Lynch added a pair of tallies and Whitman added the final score. Lynch notched three ground balls and two draw controls, senior defender Maggie Benson (Sparks, Md./Desert Mountain) picked up five ground balls and first-year midfielder Margaret Lyons (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic) registered four ground balls.
W&L returns to the field on Saturday, when it travels to Lynchburg for an 11:00 am contest.
