W&L Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 Salisbury, 15-5
LEXINGTON, Va. – Salisbury jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first half and continued to increase its advantage in the second as the Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team fell to the Seagulls, 15-5, on Saturday at Watt Field.
Senior attacker Katie Bollhorst (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) opened the contest's scoring with an unassisted goal just 56 seconds into the game. Junior attacker Shannon Carta (Annapolis, Md./South River) then notched two straight tallies for the Seagulls, giving them a 3-0 lead by the 22:13 mark.
At 21:12, junior attacker Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris-Mendham) put W&L (2-4) on the board with a free position goal to cut its deficit to two, 3-1. SU (3-0) then went on a 4-0 run to bring its advantage to 7-1 at 15:18. Brewster and junior attacker Katie Hagen (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) scored once more in the half for the Generals, but the Seagulls closed out the stanza with two scores to enter the break with a 9-3 lead.
Salisbury used the first 2:28 of the second period to score six more goals and hold a 15-3 advantage with 6:32 left to play. The Generals could not come any closer than 10 goals in the remaining time, as SU claimed the 15-5 victory.
The Seagulls held an advantage in ground balls, 20-14, and shots, 33-15, while the draw control count was even at 11-11.
In goal for W&L was sophomore Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who stopped nine shots and collected 15 goals-against. Junior Ashton Wheatley (Cambridge, Mass./Salisbury School) tallied seven saves and five goals-against in 48 minutes, while sophomore Alyssa Harmke (Crofton, Md./Seton Keough) notched two goals-againt in the remaining 12 minutes.
Brewster led the Generals with three goals and one assist. Hagen and first-year Emily Conway (Darien, Conn./Greenwich Academy) scored the final two goals. Sophomore midfielder Sammy Yates (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) picked up four draw controls and three ground balls and junior defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) grabbed four ground balls.
For Salisbury, Bollhorst paced all scoring with two goals and six assists. Junior attacker Shelbi Nemecek (Marriotsville, Md./Liberty) added four goals and one helper and Carta found the back of the net three times. Sophomore midfielder Bethany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied two goals, three draw controls and three ground balls.
W&L returns to the field on Wednesday, when it travels to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
