FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has released its 2013 Women's Lacrosse Preseason Poll and Washington and Lee was selected to finish first in voting among the league's coaches.
The Generals received 100 points and 10 first-place votes and return as the defending ODAC Champions. Roanoke was tabbed second with 87 points and Lynchburg was chosen to finish third with 85 points and the final first-place vote. Shenandoah (63), Guilford (58), Randolph-Macon (53), Virginia Wesleyan (53), Bridgewater (45), Randolph (30), Sweet Briar (21) and Hollins (10) rounded the poll results.
W&L ended the 2013 season with a 15-5 overall record after dropping a 16-8 contest to Mary Washington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue and White went a perfect 9-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and claimed the program's 13th ODAC title.
The Generals returns four All-ODAC selections from a season ago in junior defenders Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park), junior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and sophomore goalkeeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge).
Stone tallied a team-best 49 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers, while picking up two draw controls in 20 starts for the Generals. She anchored a defense that recorded a league-leading 8.45 goals-against average and was named first team all-conference, First Team All-State and second team all-region.
A Third Team All-ODAC selection, Waxter appeared in 14 contests with 13 starts, collecting 23 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and seven draw controls. She assisted Stone on the defensive unit that finished 21st in Division III after allowing a conference-low 169 goals.
Brewster entered the field in all 20 games with seven starts. She registered 38 points on 31 goals and seven assists, and also added 33 ground balls, 22 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers en route to earning Second Team All-ODAC.
Mulligan spent 978:43 in the cage for the Generals, catching 100 saves in 17 starts. Her 7.97 goals-against average was 15th in the country and she notched a .435 save percentage to garner second team all-conference and Second Team All-State accolades.
W&L kicks off its 2013 campaign on February 20, when it travels to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:00 pm game.
