LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team outscored Stevenson 6-2 in the first half en route to a 10-8 victory on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (2-0) started the contest with an unassisted goal by first-year midfielder Julia Van Sant (Chevy Chase, Md./Taft School) in the first minute. Sophomore midfielder Alex Van Horn (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) continued the fast-pace scoring, netting another at 27:07 to bring the score to 2-0.
Stevenson (0-1) made it a 2-1 game at 16:17, with a tally by first-year midfielder Erin Fischer (Leonardtown, Md./Northeast), however, Van Sant and Van Horn each notched their second goal pushing the lead to three (4-1) at 14:45.
The Mustangs' second goal of the first stanza came from sophomore attacker Leah Warner with 13:11 left in the half pulling their deficit back to two points, only to have the Generals post two more goals before time expired and go into halftime with a 6-2 advantage.
Stevenson fought back early in the second period bringing the score to a 6-6 tie in the first 6:12 of the second period, as four different Mustangs registered four straight goals. W&L sophomore midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) added a score at 21:45, but a free position shot by Stevenson first-year midfielder Amanda LeGar (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) pulled the score back to even (7-7) by the 18:31 mark.
Brewster, senior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and senior attacker Alli Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J/ West Essex) each found the back of net to bring the General lead to three (10-7) with 9:17 left in the contest. The Mustangs attempted the comeback with a goal from senior midfielder Emily Gartrell (Jarretsville, Md./North Harford), but fell in their 2012 opener.
In goal for W&L, first-year Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) collected four saves with seven goals against in 41:29 in net. Senior Jennifer Linder entered the game with 17:56 left in the contest and registered two saves and one goal against. Senior Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park, Md./Seton Keough) spent all 60:00 minutes in goal for the Mustangs, tallying six saves and 10 goals against.
Van Sant, Van Horn, Brewster and Shearin each scored two goals for the Generals. Van Horn added 13 draw controls and sophomore defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) logged three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
For Stevenson, Gartrell and LeGar led with two goals and two assists apiece. Sophomore attacker Leah Warner (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) added two assists, and first-year defender Meg Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) and senior midfielder Alli Novak (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) both registered four ground balls.
The Generals return to action when they travel to Franklin and Marshall on March 3 for a 1:00 pm contest.
