W&L Women's Lacrosse Recognized by IWLCA

GRAND LAKE, Colo. – The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) released its 2011 Academic Squads and Washington and Lee was among the women’s lacrosse programs recognized.

The Generals were one of 71 Division III programs to earn Academic Squad accolades. To qualify, teams must have achieved a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 or above for the 2010-11 academic year. Other ODAC teams to make the list included Lynchburg College and Virginia Wesleyan College. To see a full listing of the teams honored, click here

The squad had several individuals honored for their academic achievements during the season, including Emmy Mathews ‘11 earning CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Second Team All-District and IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. She also received the Berkley Award as the ODAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Classmate Kate Donnelly was the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and several players earned W&L and ODAC Scholar-Athlete recognition throughout the year.

Washington and Lee concluded the 2011 season with a 15-5 overall record and a 9-0 conference mark while collecting its 12th ODAC title. The squad earned its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2007 with a win over Christopher Newport  (15-6) in the first round. W&L then fell to Salisbury, 13-12, in the second round.
