Two Generals Named to IWLCA Academic Honor Roll
GRAND LAKE, Colo. – The Intercollegiate Women’s
Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) recently announced its 2010
Academic Honor Roll, and Washington and Lee rising seniors Emmy
Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and Kate Speare (Wallingford,
Pa./Strath Haven) were among those honored.
Mathews, a philosophy and business administration double major,
earned second team College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for the
District III College Division earlier this year. She also received
ODAC and Washington and Lee Scholar-Athlete honors, including being
named the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
As a midfielder, Mathews posted First Team All-ODAC and IWLCA
All-Chesapeake Region honors after starting 18 contests and
finishing third on the team in scoring with 41 points on 31 goals
and 10 assists. She also notched 34 draw controls, 31 ground
balls and caused 20 turnovers in helping W&L to the ODAC title
and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
An accounting major, Speare was the recipient of ODAC and W&L
Scholar-Athlete honors this past season. As an attacker, Speare
appeared in all 19 of the Generals’ contests during the 2010
season with 10 starts. She finished the season with 20 points (8g,
12a) while also tallying 15 ground balls and six caused
turnovers.
The IWLCA honored 184 student-athletes from 81 different
institutions in the 2010 Academic Honor Roll. All student-athletes
were nominated by their schools and have achieved at least junior
status academically.
