W&L Women's Lacrosse Drops 8-7 Decision to No. 8 Cortland St.
LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 11 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but No. 8 Cortland State rallied for an 8-7 win on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
Cortland State (3-1) responded, scoring the next four goals of the contest to take its first lead of the game with 1:16 remaining in the opening half (4-3). However, Megargel connected on a free position shot with just five seconds remaining in the period to knot the game at 4-4 going into the break.
The Red Dragons opened the second half with goals by sophomore midfielder Maria Di Fato (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and junior midfielder Jordan Miller (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to extend their lead to two goals (6-4) with 25:34 on the clock.
Following goals by either team that pushed the score to 7-5 with 14:28 remaining,
W&L first-year attacker Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) netted two consecutive goals to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:01 on the clock.
After a series of turnovers, Cortland gained possession of the ball and drew a free position attempt with 4:53 on the clock. Red Dragon's junior midfielder Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga, N.Y./Onondaga Central) took the attempt, feeding a pass to Miller who netted the game-winner with 4:48 remaining as Cortland held on for the 8-7 win.
For the contest, W&L held advantages in both shots, 22-16, and draw controls, 12-5, while Cortland State owned a 17-14 advantage in ground balls.
The Generals were led by Megargel, who recorded all three of her goals in the first half. Klein and Brewster added two goals apiece, while first-year defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) contributed a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Cortland State was paced by Miller and Di Fato, who each chipped in two goals.
For W&L, senior Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 in net, stopping six shots. Sophomore Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) also played the duration in goal for Cortland, and matched Farrar's nine saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to face No. 14 Catholic University at 1:00 pm.
