LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s lacrosse team recorded three goals in the opening 1:43 and never surrendered the lead as it defeated Lynchburg College, 11-5, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (8-4, 6-0) received goals from senior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), junior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and junior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) to assume a 3-0 lead with 28:17 remaining in the first half.
W&L extended its lead to 5-0 with 17:24 remaining off goals from Emmy Mathews and Britten Mathews, however, Lynchburg College (8-3, 3-2) recorded three unanswered goals to pull within 5-3 with 5:01 remaining in the first stanza. The Generals added an additional goal by Britten Mathews with seven seconds left to claim a 6-3 lead at the break.
Megargel tallied four of the Generals’ five goals in the second half, and W&L would not allow the Hornets closer than three goals (7-4) the rest of the way as it claimed its 11th consecutive win over LC.
Megargel led the Generals with five goals, while Britten Mathews finished the contest with three goals. Emmy Mathews registered two goals and junior goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 in net, stopping nine shots in claiming the win.
LC was paced by junior midfielder Patty Sheahan (Lutherville, Md./St. Timothy’s) with two goals. The Hornets received single tallies from junior midfielder Lindsay Gengras (Avon, Conn./Avon), sophomore midfielder Lesley Buckingham (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and first-year midfielder Meredith Stuart (Chapel Hill, N.C./Pomfret School). Sophomore netminder Christina Tran (Sterling, Va./Severn) played the entirety in net, stopping five shots.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they host Catholic University for a 4:30 pm contest.
