W&L Women's Lacrosse Claims 21-1 Victory over Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Nine different Washington and Lee players recorded a goal in the first half as the No. 16 Generals cruised to a 21-1 victory over Sweet Briar in ODAC women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Generals (3-2, 2-0) opened up the game recording two goals from senior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and junior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) within 16 seconds of each other at the 2:13 and 2:29 marks. Sweet Briar (1-3, 0-1) would respond, recording its lone goal of the contest at the 5:11 mark from sophomore midfielder Seanne Weekes, however, the Generals would record 12 unanswered goals over the remaining 24:49 to take the 14-1 lead at the half. W&L would tally seven additional goals in the second half in cruising to the 20-point victory.

W&L was led by Emmy Mathews, who recorded all three of her goals in the first half. W&L also received multiple-goal performances from senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS), sophomore midfielders Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and Alexis Harrison (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven), sophomore attacker Alli Shearin (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex), first-year attackers Elizabeth Bucklee (Princeton, N.J./Stuart County Day), and MJ Van Sant (Chevy Chase, Md./The Taft School) and first-year midfielder Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s), who recorded two goals apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Linder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) played 30:00 in net for the Generals, allowing one goal while recording the win. First-year goalkeeper Alex Hamill (Darien, Conn./Darien) also played 30:00 in goal, not facing a shot. SBC’s sophomore goalkeeper Happy Lathrop played all 60:00 in net, allowing 21 goals while stopping nine shots.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday as they host 17th-ranked Mary Washington for a 2:00 pm contest.
