JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team moved up five spots on Saturday and currently sits in a tie for sixth-place out of 23 teams after the second round at the Jekyll Island Invitational held at the Indian Mound Golf Club.
The Generals followed up a 322 on Friday with a 309 on Saturday for a two-day total of 631 (+55). Fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the event with a 302-301—603 (+13). In second place is 17th-ranked Whitman (614, +38), while top-ranked NYU is in third (616, +40). Methodist, ranked 12th, is in fourth (617, +41) and is followed by third-ranked Washington University of St. Louis (623, +47) in fifth. Eighth-ranked Berry is tied with W&L in sixth with a 631 (+55).
Whitman's Phoebe Nguyen continues to be the individual leader, posting a two-day score of 71-69—139 (-5) that is seven shots clear of the field.
First-year Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) is the top General thus far, sitting in a tie for 18th-place out of 120 golfers with an 80-75—155 (+11). Classmate Hannah Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) is tied for 24th just one stroke back with a 77-79—156 (+12).
Senior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) is tied for 26th with a 79-78—157 (+13) and senior Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C. / Elkin) recovered from shooting 86 on Friday to post a 77 on Saturday for a two-day total of 163 (+19) that is tied for 50th.
Sophomore Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) is in 80th-place with an 89-82—171 (+27) and first-year Hannah Wright (Thompsons Station, Tenn. / Battle Ground Academy) is tied for 119th with a 106-99—205 (+61).
Action continues on Sunday with the final round from Jekyll Island.
