PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team sits in third-place out of 14 teams after the first day of competition on Monday at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate held at the Lake View Course.
The Generals posted a 303 (+11) and are just five strokes back of 16th-ranked Methodist, which carded a 298 (+6) to lead the field consisting of 11 of the top 44 teams in Division III. Rhodes, ranked 32nd, is in second with a 302 (+10) and is followed by W&L, No. 35 Centre (304) and No. 44 Birmingham Southern (316).
Individually, Methodist's Johnna Beehner posted a -7 score of 66 and leads by four strokes over Rachel Belanger of Berry, who shot a 70 (-3).
Washington and Lee is paced by senior Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C. / Elkin), who birdied the final two holes and carded a +1 score of 74 which is tied for seventh-place out of the 90 golfers in the event. Senior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and first-year Hannah Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) both shot 76 and are tied for 12th overall.
First-year Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) is just one stroke back in a tie for 15th with a 77 (+4), while sophomore Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) is tied for 18th while playing as an individual. She carded a +6 score of 79.
Senior Dana Droz (Lancaster, Pa. / Veritas Academy) rounds out the W&L players in the field with an 85 (+12) that is tied for 55th overall.
Action continues on Tuesday with the final round at the Lake View Course.
