LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's golf team finished in a tie for second-place out of 12 teams as it hosted the General's Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
Methodist University claimed the team title with a +49 score of 311-314—625. W&L shot a 315-313—628 (+52) to finish three strokes behind in a tie with Carnegie Mellon. Centre College (639, +63) and Bridgewater (653, +77) rounded out the Top 5.
Individually, Bridgewater's Christina Herbert was the medalist, shooting a -3 score of 69 on Tuesday to finish with a 73-69—142 (-2).
W&L had two players tie for third-place with a +10 score of 154. Senior Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C. / Elkin) and first-year Hannah Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) garnered the honor. Hall posted a 78-76—154 and Jones shot 74-80—154.
Senior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) placed eighth overall out of the 71 golfers in the field with a +14 score of 82-76—158. First-year Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, N.C. / Travelers Rest) and senior Dana Droz (Lancaster, Pa. / Veritas Academy) both tied for 22nd overall. Townsend went 84-81—165 (+21), while Droz posted 86-79—165 (+21).
Sophomore Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) carded an 81-88—169 (+25) to tie for 26th and first-year Hannah Wright (Thompsons Station, Tenn. / Battle Ground Academy) rounded out the Generals in the field with an 86-86—172 (+28) that tied for 31st.
Washington and Lee returns to action on October 15-17 when it participates in the Golfweek Division III Invitational held at the Baytowne Golf Course in Sandestine, Fla.
