W&L Women's Golf Sits in 5th After Day One at Callaway Gardens

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The 17th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team began its spring season by competing in the first day of the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate hosted by Berry College at the Lake View Course on Monday.  The Generals currently rank fifth out of 16 teams with a +33 score of 321.

The field includes eight teams ranked in the Top 27 of Division III.  Second-ranked Wittenberg leads after the opening round, carding a +18 score of 306.  Sixth-ranked Berry is second with a 308 and is followed by fourth-ranked Rhodes (314).  Oglethorpe is in fourth with a 319 and W&L is fifth with its score of 321.

Berry's Sydney Weaver leads the individual portion of the event after shooting even-par (72) on Monday.  Jane Hopkinson-Wood and Brianna Yee of Wittenberg are both tied for second at +1 (73).

Washington and Lee junior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) is just three strokes off the lead after posting a +3 score of 75 that is tied for fifth.  Classmate Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C. / Elkin) is just one stroke back of Freed, tied for seventh out of the 90 competitors with a 76 (+4).

Junior Dana Droz (Lancaster, Pa. / Veritas Academy) and first-year Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) both shot 85 (+13) and are tied for 43rd, while first-year Caroline Buckley (Duxbury, Mass. / Notre Dame Academy) carded a 94 (+22) and is in 75th-place.

Washington and Lee will continue play in the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate on Tuesday morning.
