LEXINGTON, Va. – Wittenberg University carded a 311-309—620 (+44) to take the team title at the General's Invitational held at the Lexington Golf & Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The host Generals placed second out of the 11 varsity squads competing in the event, finishing eight strokes behind the Tigers with a two-day score of 315-313—628 (+52). Methodist was third with a +65 score of 317-324—641.
Bridgewater's Christina Herbert was the individual medalist, carding a 72-74—146 (+2) to finish one stroke ahead of Wittenberg's Jane Hopkinson-Wood. Wood shot 72-75—147 (+3).
Washington and Lee junior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) placed third overall with a score of 75-73—148 (+4), just two strokes behind Herbert. Classmate Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C. / Elkin) tied for sixth out of the 72 golfers in the event with a +9 score of 75-78—153.
Junior Dana Droz (Lancaster, Pa. / Veritas Academy) carded an 87-78—165 (+21) to tie for 18th and first-year Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) tied for 24th with a 78-89—167 (+23). First-year Caroline Buckley (Duxbury, Mass. / Notre Dame Academy) rounded out the W&L team players with an 88-84—172 (+28) that tied for 33rd. W&L senior Katelyn Degnan (Saint Petersburg, Fla. / Canterbury School) played as an individual, finishing in a tie for 55th with a 95-99—194 (+50).
Washington and Lee will return to action on Sunday when it takes part in the three-day Golfweek Division III Invitational at the Baytowne Golf Course in Destin, Fla.
