LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team shot 57.1 percent (8-14) in the first quarter and 15.9 percent (7-44) for the rest of the game in falling to Emory & Henry by a score of 66-52 on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (14-9, 8-7) jumped out to a nine-point lead (22-13) in the opening quarter behind five points each from senior forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) and sophomore guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy). W&L held a 24-15 advantage following a layup by senior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) at the 9:16 mark of the second quarter. However, the Wasps (19-5, 12-3) then went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:11 to tie the game at 24-24 with 6:05 left in the first half.
W&L responded with an 8-0 spurt over the next 2:52 to assume a 32-24 lead with 3:13 left before the break, but E&H closed the period with six straight points to make it a 32-30 game at the intermission. The Blue & White hit just 2-of-18 shots (.111) in the period, but drilled 5-of-6 free throws to maintain the lead.
Emory & Henry opened the third period with a 17-2 run, before the Generals made their first field goal of the second half. Senior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) ended the drought with a jumper at the 1:40 mark, as W&L went just 2-of-15 (.133) from the floor in the penultimate quarter. The E&H lead swelled to 13 points (47-34) before the Generals closed the third with a 6-1 run to make it an eight-point game (48-40) heading into the fourth period.
In the fourth, W&L chipped away at the E&H advantage and closed to within four points (51-47) on a Perszyk triple with 6:32 remaining, but the Wasps closed with a 15-5 run behind five points from sophomore forward Peyton Williams to pull away for the 14-point win.
For the game, the Generals shot just 25.9 percent (15-58) from the floor, but hit 15-of-20 (.750) from the foul line. Perszyk and first-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) each scored 10 points, while Popp also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Casey added eight points, while sophomore forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) finished with seven points and seven boards.
Emory & Henry shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor, scoring 38 of its 66 points in the paint. The Wasps also out-rebounded W&L, 44-36, in the contest. Junior forward Taylor Blevins notched a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Williams finished with 13 points. Sophomore forward Kara Stafford chipped in nine points, seven assists and four steals.
Washington and Lee finishes regular-season play on Saturday, when it hosts Shenandoah at 4:30 pm.
