W&L Women's Basketball Cruises Past Hollins, 69-58

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team closed the first period with a 15-0 run in cruising to a 69-58 victory over Hollins on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

The Generals (11-5, 5-3) led just 8-6 with exactly six minutes remaining in the opening period, before senior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) started the surge with a layup at the 5:42 mark.  She also hit another layup sandwiched in between three-pointers from sophomore guard Molly Mann (Mathews, N.C. / Weddington) and first-year guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School), and W&L was on its way to a 17-point lead 10 minutes into the contest.

Hollins (3-13, 0-8) responded to poor shooting (3-13 on FG) in the opening stanza by tallying 20 points in the second period, but only cut into the deficit by five points, as the Generals carried a 38-26 lead into the halftime break.

The two teams continued to play even through the final two periods, with the W&L lead fluctuating between as low as 11 points and as many as 17 (48-31) en route to the 11-point victory.

The Blue & White shot 40.6 percent (26-64) from the floor and held a 41-36 edge in rebounding.  Perszyk led the way with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.  She shot 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.  Senior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) posted 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, while first-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye), junior guard Andi Carrandi (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster Schools) and sophomore forward Stuart Ayer (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) each tallied eight points.  Carrandi added eight rebounds and Ayer grabbed nine boards.

Hollins was paced by first-year guard Chesslyn Owens, who notched 20 points on 10-of-19 shooting.  Junior guard Tayler Broyles registered 14 points and senior forward Lachrisha Hill chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday, when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
