LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team hit a season-high 11 three-pointers en route to claiming a 76-58 victory over Randolph in ODAC action on Saturday evening at the RAD Center.
Senior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale), sophomore guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) and first-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) all tallied 19 points for the Generals (10-4, 4-2).
The two teams played relatively even through the game's first 20 minutes, with the Blue and White holding a 29-23 lead at halftime. The WildCats (4-10, 1-5) outscored W&L, 6-1, in the opening minutes of the third to cut the Generals' lead to one (30-29) with 7:31 on the clock. Casey answered with five straight points to push the Blue and White's advantage back to six (35-29) with 6:29 left.
Randolph pulled to within three (42-39) with 3:17 remaining in the third, but the Generals closed out the period on a 10-4 run to take a 52-43 advantage into the fourth. Perszyk and Casey hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the spurt, while senior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) and sophomore forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) tallied the final four points of the run.
The W&L spread was 59-47 with 7:59 left in the fourth following a Randolph layup. The Generals then scored eight straight points, headlined by five points from Perszyk, to take their largest lead of the contest (67-47) with 6:08 remaining. The margin did not fall below double-digits for the remainder of the game, as the Generals secured the 18-point victory.
The Blue and White shot 41.2 percent (28-68) from the floor and hit 11-of-31 (.355) from behind the arc. W&L also made 9-of-13 (.692) from the free throw line and held a slim, 40-37, advantage on the glass.
The WildCats connected on 26-of-59 (.441) from the floor and went 3-of-6 (.500) from the three-point line, but only made 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.
Perszyk tallied five rebounds, six assists and four steals to go along with her 19 points, while Popp tallied 12 of her 19 points in the second period. Casey went 5-of-11 from behind the arc, while grabbing five rebounds. Smithey added eight points and seven rebounds.
Senior guard Maura McMahon led the WildCats with 17 points, and senior guard Daijah Johnson totaled 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
