DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team outscored Wells 39-13 in the first half en route to a 69-33 victory over the Express on the final day of the Daytona Beach Shootout on Thursday.
W&L (7-3) opened up the game on an 11-0 run over the first four minutes and change. Junior guard Andi Carrandi (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster Schools) got the run started with a three-pointer 48 seconds into the contest. Sophomore forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) had the final four points of the spurt that gave the Generals a double-digit lead.
Junior forward Shelby Medovich split a pair of free throws at the 4:06 mark to put the Express (2-9) on the board. The two teams traded baskets on the next three possessions down the court, with W&L maintaining a 15-3 lead. First-year guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School) and senior forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) then hit back-to-back threes to push W&L's lead to 18 (21-3). Junior forward Carly Ryan hit a triple with 1:21 left to pull the Express within 15, but Wells would get no closer, as Hughes and Kelly both hit shots to give the Generals a 25-6 lead heading into the second.
The Generals had a balanced scoring effort in the second period and maintained at least a 20-point lead throughout the quarter. First-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) gave W&L its largest lead of the period (39-10) at the 2:23 mark after she hit a three-pointer. W&L took a 39-13 lead heading into halftime.
W&L continued to push its lead in the third period, while limiting Wells to just seven points on the offensive end. The Generals shot 63.6 percent (7-11) from the field in the final 10:00 minutes of play to pull away for the 36-point win.
For the game, W&L shot 50.9 percent (28-55) from the field and hit 9-of-19 (.474) from beyond the arc. W&L also held a 37-25 edge in rebounds and dished out 18 assists. Popp led the Generals with 17 points, while Kelly tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Senior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) registered 10 points and five rebounds.
Wells hit 13-of-46 (.283) from the floor and shot just 18.8 percent (3-16) from the three-point line. Ryan led the Express with eight points, while Medovich tallied seven points.
The Generals will take a break for the holidays and return to action on January 3, when they host Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 pm.
