W&L Women's Basketball Knocks Off Gallaudet, 78-62

WASHINGTON, D.C. – First-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) scored a career-high 22 points and senior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) added 20 points, as the Washington and Lee women's basketball team won its fourth straight with a 78-62 victory over Gallaudet on Tuesday afternoon at the Gallaudet Field House.

Neither team led by more than five points in the opening quarter and the Generals (4-0) entered the second period with a slim 16-15 advantage.  Gallaudet (1-2) grabbed a 17-16 lead just 28 seconds into the second period on a layup by junior guard Sabina Shysh, but W&L used an 18-4 run over a span of 5:05 during the second period to claim a 13-point lead (34-21) with 4:27 left in the half.  Perszyk scored 12 points during the run, starting things off with back-to-back three-pointers after Shysh's layup.

Perszyk finished with 14 points in a 26-point second period and W&L carried a 17-point lead (42-25) into the break.

Popp did much of her damage after the break, totaling 13 points across the third and fourth periods.  The Blue & White maintained a double-digit lead through the final 20 minutes of play, leading by as many as 22 points (63-41) following a free throw by Perszyk with 6:59 left in the game.

The Blue & White controlled play by dominating the backboards, enjoying a 56-42 rebounding advantage.  The Generals grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, leading to 26 second chance points and 48 points scored in the paint.

As a team, the Generals shot 44.6 percent (33-74) from the floor, but hit only 5-of-14 free throws.  Popp finished 8-of-22 from the field and she grabbed six rebounds and amassed five steals.  Perszyk finished 7-of-13 from the floor and added seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Sophomore forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) tallied a career-best 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while sophomore forward Stuart Ayer (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) chipped in eight points, a game-high 14 rebounds and a career-high tying four blocks.

The Bison shot just 31.9 percent (22-69) from the floor and 4-of-18 (.222) from beyond the arc.  Junior guard Hannah Neild totaled a game-high 28 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead Gallaudet.  Shysh added 12 points and 10 boards.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Tuesday evening when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm contest.
