WINCHESTER, Va. – Washington and Lee used a 12-0 run midway through the second period to pull away for a 60-55 victory over Hollins in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday at the Warner Center.
Hollins (5-18, 0-14) held a 17-13 lead with 8:31 remaining in the second period, but the Generals (11-11, 7-7) used the run to assume a 25-17 advantage with 4:35 left in the half. Junior forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) got things started with a layup at 7:41 and senior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) followed with a jumper at 6:58. First-year guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) canned a three-pointer and Kelly added another jumper. Clifford then finished off the spurt with a triple that marked her 1,000th career point. She is the 11th player in program history to achieve the mark and the first since Katy Wilson '13.
Hollins trimmed the W&L lead back to 29-25 on a pair of free throws by senior guard Jewellanna Parfitt with 51 seconds left in the half, but Clifford finished off the second period with five straight points for a 34-25 lead at the break.
The Blue & White shot 7-for-11 (.636) from the field in the third period and maintained a 10-point lead (49-39) with 1:40 left, before closing the quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 17-point lead (56-39) entering the fourth.
The advantage remained 17 points (60-43) with 5:20 left in the game, but the Generals went cold, shooting just 2-for-13 (.154) in the fourth period. That allowed Hollins to close with a 12-0 run that produced the final margin.
W&L finished the game 23-of-60 (.383) from the field and 7-of-25 (.280) from downtown. Clifford finished with 15 points, all scored in the first half. Kelly also notched 15 points, to go along with seven rebounds, while Casey totaled 12 points.
Parfitt registered a game-high 21 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Sophomore forward Sally Sroge posted 14 points and junior forward Lachrisha Hill grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds.
