GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior forward Anais Weatherly scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Guilford to a 60-58 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Ragan Brown Field House.
The Generals (10-9, 5-5) jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the opening 6:28 of the contest on the strength of six points from sophomore forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) and four points from senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day).
Guilford (16-2, 10-1) fought back to knot the game at 16-16 on a jumper by Kayla Scott at the 8:58 mark of the second period, but never could take the lead and a jumper by junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) at the buzzer gave W&L a 33-27 lead at the halftime break.
The Quakers finally wrestled the lead away from the Generals with 6:07 left in the third period when junior guard Kate Clark drilled a jumper for a 40-39 advantage. The GC lead swelled to 45-39 following a triple from junior guard Amy Steller at the 4:40 mark, but the Generals went on an 8-0 run over the next 5:03 to assume a 47-45 lead at the 9:37 mark of the fourth period on a layup from sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic).
Guilford assumed a 53-49 lead with 7:13 left on a three-pointer by Stellar, but the Generals fought back to take the lead (54-53) on a triple by senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) at the 4:52 mark. The Quakers took the lead back shortly thereafter, but did not lead by more than three points the rest of the way. However, W&L simply could not pull even for the remainder of the contest as GC escaped with the win.
W&L shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the floor and held a 44-29 advantage on the boards. However, the Quakers made 9-of-22 (.409) from three and held a 7-1 advantage in points scored at the foul line.
