W&L Women's Hoops Falls to R-MC, 75-69

LEXINGTON, Va. – Randolph-Macon jumped out to an early 11-0 lead over the first 5:37 en route to posting a 75-69 win over the Washington and Lee Generals in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Warner Center.

Junior guard Taylor Huber (Ashland, Va. / Patrick Henry) led the surge for the Yellow Jackets, tallying five points over that span. On the other end, R-MC held the Generals to 0-for-6 shooting and forced three W&L turnovers.

With R-MC (19-5, 12-3) leading by 13 points with 10:44 left to play, an old fashioned three-point play by first-year Cam Tyler (Stevensville, Mich. / Lakeshore) sparked a 16-6 run to pull the Generals with three points (29-26) with 3:39 on the clock. However, the Yellow Jackets maintained their lead, going on quick 9-4 run to take an eight-point advantage (38-30) at the half.

Despite W&L (6-16, 4-10) holding the Yellow Jackets to 30.7 percent shooting (8-26) over the course of 13:37 in the second half, R-MC saw its lead grow to as many as 17 points (61-44) with 6:53 remaining.

The Generals responded with a late 16-4 run capped by a jumper by first-year Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) off an assist by sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) to pull the Blue and White within three points (65-62) with 2:12 left to play.

R-MC then went on a 6-2 run to take a seven-point lead (71-64) with just 44 ticks on the clock. On W&L's ensuing possession, Clifford found an open Corvino for a three-pointer that cut it to 71-67 with 33 seconds left to play.

The Generals were forced to foul to stop the clock, which gave R-MC the opportunity to make 4-of-8 free-throws in the final 31 seconds to secure the win.

For the game, R-MC shot 39.7 percent from the field (25-63), while W&L made 25-of-70 for a 37.1 shooting percentage. The Yellow Jackets held a 51-37 edge on the glass, including a 21-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.

First-year Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) led the Generals' offense with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Clifford recorded 14 points and four assists, while junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) notched 12 points and five assists. Tyler and sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) each tallied 10 points. Sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) pulled in a game-high 13 rebounds and Corvino corralled a game-high four steals.

Huber led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, while junior guard Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va. / J.R. Tucker) added 16 markers of her own. Sophomore guard Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, VA / Cape Henry Collegiate) added 10 points, while sophomore forward Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, VA / Patrick Henry) recorded eight points and nine rebounds.

The Generals are back in action tomorrow when they host Randolph for a 7:00 pm contest.
