LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) notched a career-high 29 points and recorded six steals as the Generals opened their conference schedule with a 67-63 victory over the Roanoke Maroons in women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
Roanoke (2-4/0-2) seized control of the contest early in the first half with a 15-9 run in the first six minutes. W&L (2-3/1-1) fought back, taking the lead for the first time at the 10:32 mark (17-15) off a Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) jumper that was assisted by first-year guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly).
The Blue and White never let the lead slip the rest of the half, as it took a 29-26 edge going into the intermission.
A Tatum McKee (Cornelius, N.C. / North Mecklenburg) three-point basket at the start of the second half tied the game at 29-29, but a Hendricks triple sparked a 13-2 run that gave W&L a 42-31 lead with 15 minutes left to play.
RC gradually chipped away at the Generals' lead and sliced it to just two points (51-49) on a Hannah Ward (Fincastle, VA / Lord Botetourt) old-fashioned three-point play at the 7:59 mark. That was as close as the Maroons would get as W&L closed out the final minute with four free throws from Hendricks to secure the 67-63 victory.
W&L shot a season-best 46.6 percent (27-58) from the floor and held a 41-40 advantage on the glass. Hendricks scored a game-high 29 points on 11-18 shooting from the floor. She also posted a game-high six steals and pulled in six rebounds. Wildes was the only other General in double-digits, recording her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while first-year forward Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) was one point away from a double-double of her own. She finished the game with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Roanoke shot 35.8 percent (24-67) from the field and was paced by senior guard Paxton Gwin (Buxton, NC / Cape Hatteras Secondary), who tallied 12 points and six rebounds. McKee also recorded 12 points and had a team-high three steals. Kelsey Smith chipped in 10 points and six boards.
The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday, December 4 when they host Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
