W&L Women's Basketball Drops Opener to Meredith, 62-49

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team shot just 25.0 percent (16-64) from the floor in falling to Meredith College by a score of 62-49 in the opening round of the W&L Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at the Warner Center.

The Generals (0-1) hit just 8-of-30 (.267) shots in the first half, but committed just five turnovers and went 9-of-14 (.643) from the foul line in the opening 20 minutes to trail by just six points (32-26) at the break.

Junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) hit a jumper to start the second half scoring and sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) drilled a three-pointer just over a minute later to slice it to a one-point game (32-31) at the 18:09 mark.

W&L remained down just one point (36-35) following a Gauf jumper at the 15:15 mark, but the Avenging Angels (1-0) went on a 10-1 run over the next 3:32 to assume a 46-36 lead at the 11:43 mark.  Sophomore guard Laquetta Hairston (Stafford, Va. / Mountain View) provided the book ends to the run, hitting a triple to start it and a jumper to end it.

The Generals then scored five straight to cut it to a 46-41 game with 9:24 left, but could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as 23.5 percent (8-34) shooting and 11 turnovers in the second half squelched any comeback attempt.

Gauf paced W&L in the scoring column with 12 points.  Sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) notched seven points and four rebounds.  Corvino chipped in five points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Junior guard McKenzi Edwards (Wilmington, N.C. / John T. Hoggard) registered a game-high 23 points and collected eight rebounds to lead the way for Meredith.  Sophomore forward Raven Gregory (Phoenix, Ariz. / North) chipped in 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor and 3-of-3 from the foul line.

Washington and Lee will play in the consolation game of the tournament on Sunday at 2:00 pm.  The Generals will play either Gallaudet or Alvernia.
