LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg College closed the game with a 17-6 run over the final 6:48 to claim a 56-47 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action at Turner Gym on Thursday evening.
The Generals (8-13, 5-8) claimed a 41-39 lead with 6:48 left in the game on a jumper by first-year forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School). However, the Hornets (14-8, 8-5) used a 7-2 run keyed by five points from sophomore center Lauren Penley, to push out to a 46-42 lead with 5:20 to play.
W&L pulled back to within two points (46-44) on a layup by senior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va. / Langley) at the 4:52 mark, but W&L went just 1-for-6 from the floor and 1-for-3 from the foul line, scoring just three points the rest of the way as LC pulled away for the win.
Lynchburg led by as many as 12 points (22-10) in the first half, but the Generals closed with a 15-6 run in the final 6:45 to pull within three points (28-25) at the break. W&L then opened the second half with a 10-2 surge to push out to a 35-30 lead at the 12:46 mark, but a 7-0 spurt by the Hornets gave them the lead back (37-35) and set up the game-ending run.
As a team, the Generals shot just 29.3 percent (17-58) from the field and hit only 2-of-12 (.167) three-point attempts. Vick led the way with a career-high 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Warrick totaled 10 points and sophomore guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) notched nine points and seven boards.
Lynchburg shot 35.0 percent (21-60) from the floor, but was just 1-of-10 (.100) from distance. The Hornets were paced by Penley, who scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She scored 12 of the team's final 15 points to close the game. Sophomore forward Shannon Allan chipped in 15 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Hollins for a 2:00 pm contest.
