W&L Women's Hoops Wins Debut Under Clancy, 46-34, Over Roanoke
SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team forced 28 turnovers and limited Roanoke to just 29.2 percent (14-48) shooting in posting a 46-34 win over the Maroons in the season opener for both teams.
The Generals (1-0, 1-0) held Roanoke (0-1, 0-1) scoreless for the opening 5:25 of the game and never looked back after opening an early 6-0 lead.
The Maroons recovered to close to within 15-13 at the 5:32 mark, but a 9-0 run spearheaded by six points from senior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Baylor), increased the Generals' advantage to 24-13 with 19 seconds left in the half. Roanoke drilled a three-pointer with seven seconds left in the half and W&L carried a 24-16 lead into the break.
Roanoke opened the second stanza with seven-straight points to cut it to a one-point game (24-23) just 1:56 in. However, the Generals used a 10-2 run keyed by six more points from Wilson, to push out to a 34-25 lead at the 15:03 mark.
The Maroons chipped away at the lead and eventually cut it to a 35-32 game with 10:28 remaining, but the Generals again responded with a run to push out to a 42-32 lead with 5:40 to play. W&L limited Roanoke to just 1-for-8 shooting and forced five turnovers the rest of the way in winning its first game under the direction of new Head Coach Christine Clancy.
The Generals shot just 37.0 percent (20-54) from the floor and were out-rebounded 42-31, but W&L turned the ball over just 13 times in the contest.
Wilson led the way with 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting. She also grabbed eight rebounds and notched five steals. Senior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va. / Langley) scored nine points, while sophomore guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) dished a team-high five assists. Senior guard Megan Marks (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) added three points, five rebounds and six steals.
Roanoke was led by guard Paxton Gwin, who had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it participates in the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament. The Generals will play Cabrini at 7:00 pm.
