Generals Stifle Wasps, 75-46, in Women's Basketball
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team turned in one of its best defensive performances of the season, giving up a season-low 46 points to Emory & Henry and holding the Wasps to only 29.3 percent shooting from the field (17-58) in a 75-46 victory on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
The 29-point win is the largest margin of victory for W&L this year.
E&H jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with two made layups by first-year forward Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va./Fort Chiswell) and a three-pointer from senior forward Ashlyn Baird (Boone, N.C./Watauga) to open the contest. The Generals then went on to score five unanswered points to take the lead at 16:47, as junior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley) converted a layup and put the score at 10-7.
First year guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C./Northwest Guilford) hit a jumper at 16:13 to close the Wasps' gap to one, but a free throw by Warrick at the 15:23 mark ignited a 21-2 run by the Blue and White as they took a 32-11 lead at 6:09. E&H did not complete a field goal over an 11:06 stretch.
After a layup by sophomore guard JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) at 5:07 put the Wasps back on the board (32-13), senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) was fouled behind the arc and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line to bring the lead back to 22 (35-13) with 4:55 left in the half. Both teams concluded the period with back-and-forth made shots, as W&L went into the break up 21 points (40-19).
The Generals opened the second stanza with two consecutive layups by Warrick, sparking a 15-4 run to increase their lead 32 points (55-23). First-year guard Valerie Beale (Greensboro, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) made a layup at 14:34 to pull the Wasps within 30 (55-25) and give them just their second completed shot of the half. However, W&L coasted to the win.
For the game, W&L connected on 41.4 percent of its shots from the field (29-70), and came away with 16 steals, as the Wasps committed 26 turnovers. The Blue and White also blocked seven shots, one off of their season-best total this season.
Three Generals scored in double figures led by Warrick, who recorded 17 points. Senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) netted 14 and junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) scored 12. Wilson and Bolton grabbed 12 and seven rebounds, respectively, and junior guard Megan Marks (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) notched seven points and a career-best six boards. Senior guard Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) blocked four shots and Ingram dished out five assists.
For E&H, Williams scored a team-high 14 points, but shot just 6-of-20 from the field (.300). She also added four rebounds. Baird registered seven points with six boards and Hamm tallied six points, six rebounds and two assists.
W&L returns to action Friday when it hosts Lynchburg at 7:00 pm.
