W&L Women's Basketball Falls to Hollins in Double Overtime
HOLLINS, Va. -- Junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) tallied career highs for both points (29) and rebounds (16), but it wasn't enough as the Washington and Lee women's basketball team fell at Hollins University, 71-68, in double-overtime on Tuesday evening.
Neither team led by more than five points in the contest, which featured 13 ties and 26 lead changes.
Hollins (8-10, 7-7) opened a 17-12 lead in the first half and carried a 28-26 lead into the halftime break. After sophomore forward Canci Wright made a jumper that gave Hollins a 30-26 lead just 49 seconds into the second stanza, the Generals (7-11, 5-8) responded with five straight points to assume a 31-30 lead with 18:12 left in regulation. From there, neither team would lead by more than three points as the teams exchanged the lead back and forth.
After a pair of Wright free throws gave HU a 48-47 lead at the 4:16 mark of the second half, Wilson made a pair of jumpers 40 seconds apart to give the Generals a 51-48 advantage with 3:18 on the clock. However, sophomore guard Carrie Cox drilled a three-pointer the next time down to knot the score at 51-51 with 2:46 left in regulation. Neither team could score the winner in regulation, as the Generals missed three shots in the final 29 seconds and Hollins missed with one second remaining.
In the first extra session, the teams traded the lead back-and-forth until first-year forward Lauren Morris stuck a jumper with 1:34 left for a 60-58 Hollins lead. That score remained until senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) was fouled with 13 seconds remaining and hit both foul shots to tie the game at 60-60. Ingram had a look at the game-winner as time expired and the teams headed to the second overtime.
The Generals took a quick 63-60 lead on the strength of a three-point play by junior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley) just 29 seconds into the final period. However, Hollins battled back and took a 64-63 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Jasmine Greene at the 3:09 mark, but an Ingram jumper and a free throw by senior guard Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) wrestled the lead back at 66-64 with 2:33 left. That would be the Generals' last lead as three straight points by Morris and a Greene jumper provided Hollins with a 70-66 lead with 21 seconds remaining. Following an Ingram layup and a Greene free throw, W&L had one final chance to send the game into a third overtime, but senior guard Allison Sublett's (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic) three-pointer failed to draw iron with three seconds left and the clock expired.
Wilson was 13-of-21 from the floor and collected nine offensive rebounds, to go along with three assists and three blocks. Ingram notched 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, while senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) totaled seven points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Greene finished one assist shy of a triple-double, totaling 16 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Wright posted 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Cox and Morris added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it hosts Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
