W&L Women's Basketball Fall, 67-57, at Lynchburg
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's team fell, 67-57, to Lynchburg College at Turner Gymnasium on Friday evening.
W&L (5-8, 3-5) opened the contest taking a 10-7 laed by the 13:59 mark as senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) connected on four shots from field for eight early points.
Following a Lynchburg (3-9, 2-5) timeout at the 13:25 mark, the Hornets tallied nine straight points, including seven from first-year Shannon Allan, to assume a 16-10 lead by the 11:37 mark that prompted a W&L timeout. The stoppage did little to stem the tide as LC increased its lead to 10 points (20-10) with 9:38 to play, forcing the Generals to call time once again.
Four straight three-pointers by the Hornets, two by Roslyn Alexander and two by Katie Reeves, out of the second stoppage pushed the home team's advantage to 33-15 at the 5:34 mark, causing the Generals to call their third timeout of the first period. An 8-3 run by W&L to end the first half gave LC a 36-23 advantage at the break.
In the second period, W&L trimmed its deficit to nine points (48-39), before LC extended back out to a 13-point advantage (56-43) with 6:29 to play. The Blue and White had one final rally, pulling to within seven points (58-51) at the 4:21 mark, but four straight points from the Hornets made it a 58-47 game and LC held off the Generals the rest of the way.
W&L shot just 35.4 percent from the floor (23-65), including a 2-of-19 (1-13 3FG) showing from senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale), compared to 49.0 percent (24-49) for the Hornets. W&L outrebounded LC 42-33 and forced the Hornets into 18 turnovers.
Bolton finished with a game-high 26 points on 12-of-21 shooting to go with 11 rebounds. Junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) added 10 points and 12 boards.
Allan and Carly Greenlief led the Hornets with 13 points apiece and Shea Kelley added 10 points off the bench. Katie Crump netted eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Randolph at 4:00 pm.
