LEXINGTON, Va. - A layup by sophomore forward Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) with 31 seconds left in regulation broke a 62-62 tie to propel Eastern Mennonite to a 64-62 win over the Washington and Lee women's basketball team on Tuesday night at the Warner Center.
With the scoreboard showing 9:50 to play, a three-pointer by senior guard Marla Young (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) jumpstarted a 23-7 game-ending run by the Royals, and was topped by the game-winner from Ygarza. During this stretch, the Generals turned the ball over seven times, and netted only two of their nine attempts from the field. Conversely, EMU (9-1, 6-1) knocked down 11 of its final 16 shots from the floor as seven different players scored during the spurt.
With 1:26 left in regulation, EMU sophomore guard Stephanie Rheinheimer (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) knocked down a trey to tie the game (62-62), and set up the frantic final minute.
Following Ygarza's layup, W&L (5-7, 3-4) senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) missed a potential game-tying shot, and the rebound was pulled down the Royals' sophomore forward Kala Yoders (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County). However, a subsequent turnover by EMU led to one final chance for the Generals to tie or take the lead, but a desperation three by junior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley) was off the mark and the Royals escaped with the two-point win.
After W&L scored the first four points of the game, EMU went on a 7-0 run capped by a layup by Yoders with the clock at 16:34. The Generals then went on to take the lead (17-15) at the 10:12 mark as senior guard Allison Sublett (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic) sank a three-pointer. W&L continued to increase its lead throughout the first half, connecting on 14-of-26 shots from the field (.538), including junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) tallying 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the first 20 minutes.
As a team, W&L shot 49.1 percent from the field (26-53) and forced EMU into 19 turnovers. The Royals shot 46.6 percent from the floor (27-58), including 64.0 percent (16-25) in the second half, and outrebounded W&L 36-29.
Wilson posted a game-high 19 points, and also grabbed seven rebounds. Senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) recorded 13 points with eight assists and three steals. Bolton added 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Leading the Royals was Yoders, who registered 13 points and grabbed seven boards. Ygarza netted 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, and also had five rebounds. Sophomore guard Keyla Baltimore (Bristow, Va./Bluefield) chipped in eight points, five boards, three assists, and three steals.
The Generals next see action on Friday, January 13, when they travel to Lynchburg College for a 7:00 pm contest.
