LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced the hiring of Kelly Mathis as assistant women’s basketball coach.
Mathis will join the Generals athletic department and physical education staff this summer in preparation for the 2010-11 school year.
A 2009 graduate of Pfeiffer University with a bachelor of arts in sports management, Mathis was a letterwinner and team captain for the Falcons’ women’s basketball team. She averaged 5.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game over the course of her career and helped Pfeiffer to a school-record 26-5 mark and a conference championship during her sophomore campaign.
Mathis recently served as a business manager at Next Level Training in Knoxville, Tenn., while also serving as an assistant girls basketball coach at Knoxville Catholic High School and as an assistant coach with the Rocky Top Women’s Basketball Summer League. She has worked numerous camps including the Annette Watts Basketball Camp in Davidson, N.C., and the Maryville (Tenn.) High School Boys and Girls Basketball Camps. Mathis’ work experiences have also included completing internships with the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and with the Falcon Club at Pfeiffer.
Washington and Lee completed the 2009-10 year with a program-best 18-10 overall record and a 14-6 conference ledger. The Generals won their first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament, falling to Christopher Newport in the opening round.
