W&L Women's Basketball Knocks Off Hollins, 78-58
HOLLINS, Va. – Washington and Lee shot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the floor in the second half and used a 14-0 run immediately following the break to post a 78-58 victory over Hollins on Monday evening in Hollins, Va.
The Generals (3-1, 2-0) held Hollins (3-2, 1-1) to just 33.3 percent (8-24) shooting from the field in recording a 34-26 lead following the opening 20 minutes. W&L then used the aforementioned surge to register a commanding 22-point lead (48-26) at the 16:47 mark. Senior center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) notched five points during the run, while sophomore forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) contributed four points.
The W&L lead swelled to as many as 29 points (70-41) following a layup by junior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) and a free throw by sophomore forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley) with 9:28 to play as the Generals went on to defeat Hollins for the 13th-straight time.
W&L shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor for the game and drilled 15-of-17 (.882) free throws. Ingram paced the Generals with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Herman posted a season-best 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, while junior guard Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) logged 12 points.
Hollins was led by sophomore guard Lacie Forrest and first-year guard Carrie Cox, who totaled 12 points apiece. Senior guard Tamara Phillips notched 11 points, while first-year forward Chanci Wright registered 10 points and six rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Mary Baldwin for a 7:00 pm contest.
