W&L Riding Opens Season at Randolph/Lynchburg Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team kicked off its 2013-14 campaign with competition at the Randolph/Lynchburg IHSA Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals finished the day in seventh place, recording 21 points as a team. Randolph and Sweet Briar led the nine-team group with 35 points each, followed by Bridgewater (30) in third, Hollins (27) in fourth and James Madison (26) rounding out the Top 5. Lynchburg (25), W&L, Virginia (16) and Radford (14) wrapped up the team results.

Senior captain Claire Stevenson (Southampton, N.Y./St. Paul's School) led W&L with a first-place finish in open equitation over fences. 

First-year Laurel Romano (Milford, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) took second in the novice over fences, while sophomore Laura Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) took third in the open equitation over fences and the intermediate equitation on the flat. 

Other top-five performances include third place in intermediate over fences by Caleigh Wells (Calabasas, Calif./Louisville), third by senior Maia Robbins (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) in intermediate equitation on the flat, a fourth-place finish in the novice flat by Charlotte Magee (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and a fifth place finish by first-year Jennifer Lee (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) in the advanced walk-trot-canter.

The Generals return to action on October 25, when they compete at the Hollins IHSA Invitational.
