W&L Equestrian Takes Fourth at Sweet Briar IHSA
SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team finished in fourth place on Sunday at the Sweet Briar IHSA Invitational.
Virginia tied host Sweet Briar with 30 points to take the team title. Randolph notched 29 points for third place, W&L took fourth with 28 points and Hollins was fifth with 24 points. Lynchburg (22), Bridgewater (21), Longwood (16), James Madison (1), Roanoke (9), Radford (7) and Mary Baldwin (6) wrapped up the team results.
First-year Laura Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) claimed the Generals' only win of the day, taking first in the intermediate flat, while senior Molly Rountree (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) was runner-up in the open flat and first-year Sara Cook (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finished second in the intermediate over fences.
Other top performances include sophomore Rachel Christensen (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) registering a third-place showing in the walk-trot-canter, sophomore Megan Shearer (Columbia, Md./Notre Dame Prep) finishing fourth in the walk-trot, junior Claire Stevenson (Southampton, N.Y./St. Paul's School) coming in fifth in the open over fences and senior Gina Bufton (Preston, Md./Saint Peter and Paul) placing fifth in the novice flat.
W&L returns to action on Saturday, when it competes at the Bridgewater IHSA Invitational.
