W&L Riding Opens Season with Third-Place Finish at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee riding team opened its fall season with a third-place finish on Friday at the Randolph College Invitational.

The Generals placed in 10 of the 12 classes, including eight top-three finishes. James Madison University won the invite with 29 points, followed by Sweet Briar (28), Washington and Lee (26), Lynchburg College (26) and Bridgewater (25) in the top five. The competition was rounded-out by the University of Virginia (23), Hollins (19), Randolph (19), Roanoke (19), Longwood (17) and Radford (9).

Leading the way for W&L was junior Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville), who finished first in the open equitation on the flat and senior Caitlin McCurdy (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), who took the second spot in the novice equitation over fences. The Generals recorded five third-place finishes, including first-year Claire Stevenson (Southampton, N.Y./Saint Paul's) in the open equitation over fences, senior Allison Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross School) in the open equitation on the flat, sophomore Stephanie Malaska (Redmond, Wash./Eastside Catholic) in the intermediate equitation on the flat, first-year Juli Sorenson (Spring Valley, Calif./Grossmont) in the beginner walk-trot-canter and junior Camille Cobb (Huntersville, N.C./Harding University) in the walk-trot.

Other placings for W&L included sophomore Molly Rountree's (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) fourth-place finish in the intermediate equitation over fences, Stevenson finishing fourth in the intermediate equitation on the flat and Lemon taking the sixth spot in the open equitation over fences.

The Generals return to action on Oct. 29 as they travel to the Bridgewater Invitational.
