W&L Riding Ties for Sixth at Hollins Invitational

W&L Riding Ties for Sixth at Hollins Invitational

HOLLINS, Va. -- The Mounted Generals were in back in the saddle Sunday at Hollins University in their second IHSA competition of the fall season.

In keeping with the impending growth of the region (two new schools are observing this semester for inclusion next term), Sunday’s show marked a first in the Mounted Generals’ 10- year history: supplying horses for an IHSA competition.  Teaming up with “sister” school Hollins and its great string of mounts, Coach Reistrup, alum Sarah Bujtas ‘09 and W&L provided five horses to expand the number of rides that could be offered to participants.

The competition allowed each school six rides over fences and 10 rides on the flat (usually either 5 & 7, or point rider only – one rider per class from each school), utilizing 22 horses from Hollins and the five additional from W&L.

The Generals had a solid showing, placing sixth as a team and individually in nearly every class, including six Top 3 finishes, two earned by sophomore Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville), further securing her position among the top of the open rider regional standings.

However, the W&L horses were the real stars of the day, with 10 Top 3 placings, including two wins; they represented the W&L program in exemplary fashion, rewarding excellence while maintaining their composure in the face of “new” rider error.  With 9 of 17 placings in the Top 3 (including several with W&L riders), it would be hard to pin the title of Most Valuable Horse on just one:  VerMeer (“Bailey”) placed in 7 of 8 classes over fences and on the flat (2nd three times) while Kathadin (aka “Redd”) placed in 4-of-5 flat classes with a win and a very narrow second.  W&L’s own Southbound (“Vinny”) also won a class over fences. Reistrup’s homebred “Omaha” showed real range placing well both over fences with the more experienced riders, and pulled through at the end of the day for riders in the two WTC divisions.  Bujtas’ “Myles” had placings on the flat as well.  The W&L horses will be in action again at the February Hollins IHSA.

The Generals will return to action on Sat., Oct. 31 as the compete in the Bridgewater IHSA Invitational.
