W&L Finishes Ninth at UVA Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Washington and Lee riding team placed ninth out of 12 teams competing at the University of Virginia Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals finished the day in ninth place with 12 points. The host University of Virginia won the invitational with 29 points, followed by Lynchburg (25), Hollins (20), Bridgewater (19) and Randolph (18) in the top five.

W&L was led by sophomore Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville), who finished first in the open equitation on the flat. First-year Evelyn Norton (Elon, N.C./Caldwell Academy) finished fourth in the walk-trot, while first-year Molly Rountree (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) took fifth in the intermediate equitation over fences.

In regional action, Morse earned reserve champion laurels in the open flat, which qualifies her for the Zone Finals on April 11th and an opportunity to compete at nationals.

W&L also placed two riders in the top six for the Cacchione Cup, awarded to the region’s top rider. Morse finished as the reserve champion with 65 points, trailing only Hollins’ Katie Furches, who accumulated 75 points on the season. Junior Allison Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) finished in sixth with 26 points.

The Generals ended the season fifth in the region with 153 points. Hollins University claimed the regional championship with 221 points, followed by Lynchburg (186), Bridgewater (184), Sweet Briar (179) and W&L (153).

The Generals will return to action on April 9 at the ODAC Championship hosted by Randolph College.
