Cross Country at NCAA Regionals

SEQUIN, Texas -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships hosted by Texas Lutheran University.

The W&L women narrowly missed an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships as a team when they finished third overall out of 24 teams. The W&L men finished eighth out of 19 teams. The top two teams for both the men and women receive an automatic bid to the NCAA National Meet.

Individually, the women had four all-region runners led by seniors Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield), who both received individual bids to the NCAA Championship meet. Shaw finished 11th overall out of 169 runners with a time of 22:57, while Webb completed the course in 23:14 to finish in 14th place.

Senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) and junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) also garnered all-region accolades due to their individual finishes. Taylor crossed the tape in 16th place (23:26), while Telfeyan placed 27th (23:59). Sophomore Christine Balistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) and junior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) rounded out the Generals' top finishers in 38th (24:27) and 54th place (24:56), respectively.

The Washington and Lee men placed three runners on the all-region team highlighted by senior Michael Welsh's (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) 17th-place finish in a time of 26:25. Senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) and sophomore Jack Ivy (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) joined Welsh on the all-region team. Berry finished 20th out of 151 runners with a time of 26:31 and Ivy placed 35th overall with a time of 27:02.

Senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and first-year Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School) rounded out the top finishers for the Generals. Jackson placed 48th (27:24), while Gossett finished 80th (28:09).

The Washington and Lee men have now completed their season, while Shaw and Webb will compete as individuals at the NCAA Championships held on Saturday at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind. The W&L women will also wait until Sunday's team selections to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the championship meet. 

Cross Country at ODAC Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s cross country team claimed its fifth-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference title on Saturday morning at Virginia Wesleyan College. The W&L men placed third overall, just nine points away from winning its fifth-straight conference crown.

The women scored 23 points in taking four of the top seven individual places and finishing 25 points ahead of the second place team, Roanoke College. The men finished just nine points behind team champion Lynchburg College and seven points behind Virginia Wesleyan, the second place team.

The women were paced by senior Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park). Shaw won the race with a time of 21:41 en route to being named the ODAC Runner of the Year. Senior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) finished as the runner-up with a time of 21:54 and senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) placed fourth overall, crossing the tape in 22:26. Taylor was also named the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third-straight year. Junior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) joined Shaw, Webb and Taylor as a First Team All-ODAC honoree after placing seventh with a time of 22:52.

Junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and sophomores Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and Christine Balistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) all earned Second Team All-ODAC laurels. Telfeyan finished ninth overall (23:06), Fenwick placed 11th (23:22) and Balistreri completed the course in 23:32 for a 14th-place finish.

W&L Head Coach Kris Hoey was tabbed the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the fifth-straight year.

Senior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) led the W&L men with a third-place finish, completing the course in a time of 25.33. He also received the ODAC Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Welsh was joined on the All-ODAC First Team by senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fa./Episcopal), who finished fifth overall with a time of 25:44. Sophomore Jack Ivy (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) earned Second Team All-ODAC accolades after finishing eighth overall (25:54), while senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished 20th overall with a time of 26:37.

The Generals will return to action on November 15 as they participate in the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championship held at Texas Lutheran in San Antonio, Texas.

Cross Country at Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble. The W&L women finished ninth out of 27 teams, while the men were 16th of 30 teams.

The W&L women were paced by senior Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), who finished 13th out of 232 runners with a time of 22:14. Senior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) placed 23rd overall with a time of 22:40, while senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) completed the course in 23:14 to place 48th overall.

Senior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) paced the Washington and Lee men with a 41st place finish out of 271 runners. Welsh completed the course in 25:46. Senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) finished in 52nd place with a time of 25:54, while senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished in 88th place, crossing the finish line in 26:26.

The Generals will return to action on Nov. 1 as both teams compete in the ODAC Championships hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College.

Men's Cross Country at Hanover Invitational

HANOVER, Ind. -- The Washington and Lee men's cross country team finished 16th out of 20 teams at the Hanover Pre-Nationals Invitational on Saturday morning.

Senior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) led the charge for the Generals with a 34th-place finish out of 230 runners with a time of 26:37.86.  Classmate Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) crossed the finish line in 55th place (26:58.25), while senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished 103rd overall with a time of 27:54.01.  First-year Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) placed 116th (28:17.07) and sophomore Jack Ivy (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) finished in 123rd place with a time of 28:25.85.

The Generals return to action on October 18 as they compete in the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble beginning at 10:30 am.

Men's Cross Country at Dickinson Invitational

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men’s cross country team finished 10th out of 25 teams with 99 points at the Dickinson Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Generals were paced by senior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma), who finished 15th overall with a time of 26:58. Senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) crossed the tape in 27:23 to place 30th overall, while senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) placed 66th overall with a time of 28:05.

Freshman Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School) and Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) rounded out the Top 5 for the Generals. Gossett placed 71st (28:13) and Warneford-Thomson finished 80th overall (28:27). The W&L men return to action on Oct. 4 as they participate in the Hanover College Invitational.

The women will next compete at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota next Saturday.

Cross Country at JMU Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s cross country team competed at the James Madison Invitational and finished fifth out of eight teams on Saturday morning at the New Market Battlefield.

The men were paced by first-year Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School), who finished eighth overall among Division III runners with a time of 28:03. Senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) crossed the finish line in 28:16 for an 11th place overall mark, while first-year Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) notched a 16th-place finish with a time of 28:36. Junior Ben Stutts (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) rounded out the Top 20 finishes for the Generals, as he completed the course in 28:39 for an 18th place mark.

The men’s cross country team returns to action on Sat., Sept. 20 at the Dickinson Invitational.

Men's Cross Country Hosts Washington and Lee Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished first overall at the W&L Invitational held at the Dick Miller Cross Country Courses on Saturday morning. The men were first out of 11 teams, while the women were first out of 10 teams.

Senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) paced the men by finishing third overall with a time of 29:34. First-year Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School) placed fourth with a time of 29:38, while senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished sixth overall (29:55). Junior Stuart Vassey (Peachtree City, Ga./Woodward Academy) rounded out the W&L finishers in the Top 10, placing ninth with a time of 30:03.

The W&L women were led by senior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School), who won the race by crossing the finish line in 24:12. Junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) completed the course in 24:36 to finish second overall, while senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) placed fourth overall with a time of 24:48. Junior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) also finished in the Top 10, crossing the line in sixth place (25:08).

The W&L men will return to action on Saturday as they participate in the James Madison Invitational. The women will next compete on Sept. 27 at the Roy Griak Invitational held at the University of Minnesota.
