W&L CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES IN NCAA SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGIONAL

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Emory. The Generals men’s squad finished 10th out of 20 teams, while the W&L women came in eighth out of 20 teams.

On the men’s side, senior Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led all Generals with an 11th-place overall finish and a time of 26:53.84. With his finish, he earns all-region accolades for the third time in his collegiate career.

Junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) and senior Rusty Meyer (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit Prep) were the second and third W&L runners to cross the tape, respectively. Chambers finished 30th overall with a time of 27:49.66, while Meyer recorded a 47th-place time of 28:29.31.

For the women, sophomore Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) led all Generals with a 41st-place run of 25:33.35. Sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) finished in 45th-place (25:40.44), while freshman Julie Harris (Richmond, Va./Saint Catherines) finished 56th overall (26:04.64).

W&L CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES IN ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday at the ODAC Championships hosted by Lynchburg College. The W&L men’s and women’s teams both finished third overall.

On the men’s side, senior Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) won the race, crossing the tape in 28:11.00. He finished 10 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor and became the first General to earn ODAC Runner of the Year honors since Jason Callen won the 1997 ODAC race.

Junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) and senior Rusty Meyer (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit Prep) both earned Second Team All-ODAC honors with their finishes. Chambers placed 11th with a time of 29:49.00, while Meyer crossed the tape in 30:11.00 in placing 14th overall.

For the women, freshman Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) earned Second Team All-ODAC accolades by placing eighth overall with a time of 27:10. Sophomore Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) placed 15th (27:36), sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) placed 16th (27:44) and freshman Tippins Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) placed 17th (27:53).

W&L returns to action on Sat., Nov. 15, as it competes in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships in Atlanta, Ga.

W&L CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS IN ACTION AT DESALES

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the DeSales Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The men competed in a varsity and sub-varsity 8K while the women ran a varsity and sub-varsity 5K.

In the women’s varsity race the Generals finished 12 out of 31 teams. The Generals were led by sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), who finished 40th overall with a time of 20:58.24. Freshman Tippens Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) was second for W&L with a 47th-place time of 21:08.84. In sub-varsity competition, sophomore Ashley Brown (Kingwood, W.Va./Preston) finished 44th overall with a time of 22:57.92.

On the men’s side, Junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) led all Generals in varsity competition with a 26th-place time of 27:48.37 Senior Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) finished second for W&L and 29th overall with a time of 27:52.71. In the sub-varsity race the Generals finished 12th out of 12 teams, and were led by freshman David Kronenfeld (Greensboro, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy). Kronenfeld finished 38th overall with a time of 30:23.51.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the ODAC Championships, hosted by Lynchburg.

W&L CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS COMPETE IN VIRGINIA STATE II-III MEET

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday at the Virginia State Division II-III meet hosted by Eastern Mennonite. The W&L men’s squad placed third of eight teams, while the women were third of nine teams.

Leading the way for the W&L men was junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area), who placed fourth overall with a time of 27:58. Senior Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) placed fifth overall (28:15), while senior Rusty Meyer (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit Prep) was eighth with a time of 28:35.

For the W&L women, sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) finished third overall with a time of 25:27. Freshman Tippins Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) placed 10th overall (26:01), while freshman Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) placed 11th (26:08).

The Generals will be in action again next Saturday as they compete in the DeSales Invitational.

W&L CROSS COUNTRY IN ACTION AT DICKINSON INVITATIONAL

CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Dickinson Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Both squads ran in a 4K race, while the women also competed in a 6K run.

In the men’s 4K, junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) led all Generals with a 10th-place time of 13:10.13, while senior Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) finished second for W&L and 16th overall with a time of 13:18.55.

On the women’s side the Generals placed 12th out of 18 teams in a combined score of the two races. Freshman Tippens Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) led W&L in the 4K, while sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) led the Generals 6K effort. Stone clocked a 16:27.87 for 31st place, and Frayer crossed the 6K line at 25:39 for 55th place.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Virginia State Meet.

W&L WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY WINS ROANOKE INVITATIONAL; MEN PLACE SECOND

SALEM, Va. -- Freshman Tippens Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) led all Generals with a second-place time of 20:11.5 to help the Washington and Lee women’s cross country team win the Roanoke Invitational on Saturday. The Generals bested 10 teams for the top-honors.

On the men's side, junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) finished third overall with a time of 27:57.8, and senior Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) took fourth with a 28:05.6 clocking to help the Generals finish second.

Washington and Lee won the women’s race with 45 team points, besting Juniata (57), Roanoke (72), Southern Virginia (114), King (164), Shepherd (185), Hollins (190), Ferrum (204), Mary Baldwin (232) and Greensboro (236).

Roanoke won the men’s competition with 22 team points, while the Generals finished ahead of Juniata (86), Eastern Mennonite (99), Ferrum (146), Greensboro (157), Southern Virginia (165) and King (214).

Both teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Dickinson Invitational. Race time is 10:15 a.m.

W&L CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS WIN W&L INVITATIONAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Both the Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams took top honors at the 2003 addition of the W&L Invitational on Saturday.

The Generals won the women’s race with 37 team points. Trailing W&L were Catholic (53), Southern Virginia (79), Bridgewater (125), Shenandoah (147), Mary Baldwin (152) and Hollins (154). On the men’s side the Generals scored 39 team points. Finishing behind W&L were Bridgewater (49), Catholic(75), Southern Virginia (95), Lynchburg (98) and the W&L alumni squad (151).

Freshman Tippins Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) took top honors for the W&L women with a fourth-place time of 23:03. Sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) came in sixth overall with a time of 23:30.

Th W&L men’s team finished three runners in the top five positions, led by second-place overall finisher Andy Schorr (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood). Schorr, a senior, finished with a time of 29:59. Junior Steve Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) finished third overall with a time of 30:05, and sophomore Andrew Johnson (Hardwick, N.J./Blair Academy) took fifth place with a time of 30:28.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 20 when the Generals compete at the Roanoke Invitational. Race time is 11:15 a.m.
