PENN LAIRD, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's cross country team placed third out of four teams at the Doc Jopson Invitational on Friday night.
The Generals finished with 69 points, with Lynchburg taking the top spot with 32 and host Bridgewater coming in second with 45. Eastern Mennonite took fourth with 99 points.
Junior Kane Thomas (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood) led W&L with a fourth-place finish in the 6k race. He crossed the finish line in 20:04.80. The next General to finish was sophomore James Busch (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), taking 14th in 21:15.00. Senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrews) was eight seconds behind Busch in 16th at 21:23.00.
Finishing fourth for Washington and Lee was first-year Jake Mack (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) in 20th with a time of 21:42.30, and sophomore Scott Sugden (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) rounded out the scoring for the Generals in 22nd at 21:43.00.
Junior Dan Nafzinger of EMU took the top spot in 19:30.00, senior Lawrence Minor of Lynchburg claimed second at 19:49.00 and sophomore Anthony McBride of Lynchburg edged Thomas for third with a time of 20:04.10.
The Generals compete next Saturday, September 29, at the Don Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, Md.
