W&L Men's XCountry Finishes Second at the Generals Invite
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's cross country team opened its 2011 season by hosting the Generals Invitational on Saturday morning at the Dick Miller Cross Country Course.
The Generals finished second out of the eight teams competing at the meet, eclipsed only by the neighboring VMI Keydets, who took eight of the top nine individual finishes at the event.
Senior Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School) finished as W&L's top individual in the meet, crossing the finish line in 10th place out of 75 runners with a time of 29:10. Classmate Ryan Henner (Avondale Estates, Ga./Chamblee) finished 11th with a time of 29:17, while first-year Alex Smith (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) completed the course in 30:03 to place 16th overall.
First-year James Busch (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) finished one second (30:04) behind Smith for 17th-place and senior Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) crossed the line in 30:14 to place 19th overall.
Washington and Lee will return to action on September 24 as it competes in the Dickinson Invitational.
