LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed second overall as the Generals hosted their season-opening invitational on Saturday morning at the Dick Miller Cross Country Courses.
The W&L men tallied 31 team points and finished just three points behind Mary Washington (28) for first place. All told, six W&L runners placed in the Top 11 led by first-year Harrison Tucker (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), who won the race with a time of 28:45, 14 seconds better than the runner-up.
Junior Joe Stusek (Bozeman, Mont./Billings West) finished fourth overall with a time of 29:22, while first-year Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) was seventh overall (29:30). Sophomore Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School), junior Rob George (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) and senior Ben Stutts (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) finished in ninth, 10th and 11th places, respectively. Gossett finished in 29:36, George crossed the line in 29:43 and Stutts completed the course with a time of 29:47.
The W&L women posted 39 team points, just four points behind champion Mary Washington. Five runners finished among the Top 13 in the women’s race, led by first-year Lauren Schultz’s (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) second-place finish with a time of 20:41. Senior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 21:14, while first-year Louisa Phillips (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) placed eighth overall (21:48).
First-year Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan) finished 12th overall (21:56) and senior Rosemary Kelley (West Springfield, Va./West Springfield) completed the course in 22:12 for a 13th-place finish.
The W&L men return to action on Saturday as they compete in the Guilford Invitational. The women will race again on Sept. 26 in the Roanoke Invitational held at the Mowels Spring Park.
