MEN COME IN THIRD PLACE, WOMEN FOURTH AT ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS (4/24)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee's men's track team finished in third place at the ODAC track Championships at Wilson Field, while the women finished fourth.

The women were paced by a first place finish from freshman Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kans./ Hayden) who topped all competitors in the javelin throw with a distance of 110'3.5". Junior Mederdith Mlynar (New Fairfield, Conn./ New Fairfield) finished second in the event with a distance of 104'6.5".

The men's team's performances were highlighted by senior Marc Granger (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill), who finished first in the shot put with a distance of 41'7". Sophomore Chris Wahl (Gaithersburg, Md./ Quince Orchard) placed third in the sameevent with a distance of 40'.

Lynchburg's men's and women's teams both reigned victorious. Five teams competed each of the men's and women's championships.


WOMEN FINISH SECOND, MEN THIRD AT ROYAL INVITATIONAL (4/17)

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee's track teams faired very well at the Royal Intvitional at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon. The women's team finished in second place, while the men came in third place.

The women were paced once again by senior Lisa Brennan (Cape Vincent, N.Y./ Thousand Islands). She came in first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:27.40. Freshman Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kans./ Hayden) finished in second place in the javelin throw with a distance of 109'1", while junior Meredith Mlynar came in third place with a distance of 94'10.5". Sophomore Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./ Bishop Neumann) placed second in the long jump with a distance of 16'3", coming within a half-inch of a school record.

Senior Marc Granger (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) paced the menUs squad by finishing in first place in the shot put with a distance of 42'11.5". Sophomore Chis Wahl (Gaithersburg, Md./ Quince Orchard) followed Granger in the event with a distance of 40'7". Junior Leigh Miller (Garden City, N.Y./ Garden City) finished in second place in the javelin throw with a distance of 149'9".

W&L will host the men's and women's ODAC outdoor track championships next Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.


BRENNAN, BESTIC LEAD W&L MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK TEAM AT LYNCHBURG INVITATIONAL (4/10)

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior Lisa Brennan (Cape Vincent, N.Y./Thousand Islands) finished second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:59.07 and senior Joe Bestic (Salem, Ohio/Salem) placed sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.97 to lead the men' s and women's track teams at the Lynchburg College Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Also producing an impressive showing for the women was freshman Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden), who finished in third place in the javelin with a toss of 112'05". On the men's side, the Generals' 4x100 meter relay team placed second overall with a time of 45.70 and senior Marc Granger (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) was eighth in the shot put with a toss of 41'05".

Both the men and the women will be in action again on April 17, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to compete against Eastern Mennonite.


CALCE PACES WOMEN'S TRACK AT BATTLEGROUND RELAYS (3/27)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./ Bishop Neumann) finished in third place in the long jump event with a distance of 15'10.5", leading the Washington and Lee women's track team at the Battleground Relays on Saturday afternoon. The meet was held on the campus of Mary Washington College.

Sophomore Wendy Case (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/ Greely) finished in fifth place in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:19.9.

W&L's relay team also enjoyed a successful day at the meet. The 4x200 relay team finished in second place with a time of 1:54.9. The distance relay team finished in fifth place with a time of 13:47.6. The 4x100 relay team rounded out the group of teams that placed, by finishing in sixth place with a time of 54.16.

The Generals will next compete at the Lynchburg College Invitational on April 10.


ALFORD BREAKS MEET RECORD AT BRIDGEWATER INVITATIONAL (3/27)

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Senior Joe Bestic (Salem, Ohio/ Salem) finished in first place in the 400 hurdles event with a time of 59.01, pacing the Washington and Lee men's track team at the Bridgewater College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Senior Darrick Alford (Richmond, Va./ Douglas Freeman) finished in first place at the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:20.41, setting a meet record. No team scores were recorded.

Sophomore Chris Wahl (Purceville, Va./ Loudon Valley) finished in third place at the shot put event with a distance of 40'1".

Bestic finished in third place in the 110 high hurdles event with a time of 16.63, while senior Paul Shea (Sunnyside, N.Y./ Holy Cross) finished in fifth place with a time of 17.61.

Sophomore Patrick Wright (Arlington, Texas/ Trinity Valley) tied for second place in the 400 meter run with a time of 51.98, while junior Jason Nichols (Austin, Texas) took fifth place with a time of 53.24.

Junior Leigh Miller (Garden City, N.Y./ Garden City) placed third in the javelin throw with a distance of 149'10". Junior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./ Hilton Head) rounded out the W&L peak performers with a third place finish in the 200 meter run with a time of 23.127.

No team scores were recorded.

The Generals will compete at the Lynchburg College Invitational on April 10.


BRENNAN FINISHES IN FIRST PLACE IN WOMEN'S 3000 METER RUN AT RONAOKE IVITATIONAL (3/20)

SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee's women's track team finished in ninth place out of 12 teams, while the men's team finished in 11th place out of 14 teams at the Roanoke College Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The women were once again led by senior Lisa Brennan (Cape Vincent, N.Y./ Thousand Islands), who finished in first place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:08.00, 3.6 seconds faster than her closest competitor. Freshman Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kans./ Hayden) finished in second place in the javelin throw with a distance of 106'10". Sophomore Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./ Bishop Neumann) came within five inches of setting a school record by finishing in fifth place in the long jump event with a distance of 15'11.25". Junior Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./ Scotus) finished in fifth place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.54 seconds.

Junior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./ Hilton Head) paced the men with a fifth place finish in the 200 meter dash, timing 23.54 seconds. Senior Joe Bestic (Salem, Ohio/ Salem) finished in fifth place in the 400 intermediate hurdles event with a time of 59.13 seconds.

Next Saturday, the women's team will compete at the Battleground Relays, while the men's team will be at the Bridgewater College Invitational.


W&L WOMEN FINISH IN SECOND PLACE, MEN IN FIFTH AT W&L INVITATIONAL (3/13)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The W&L women's track team finished in second place out of eight teams, while the men's team finished in fifth place out of nine teams at the annual W&L Invitational track meet on Saturday afternoon.

The womenUs team was once again led by senior Lisa Brennan (Cape Vincent, N.Y./ Thousand Islands), who took first place in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:01.82 and second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.69. Sophomore Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./ Hampton Bays) finished right behind Brennan in the 800 event, finishing third with a time of 2:30.44.

Sophomore Wendy Case (Cumberland Foreside, Me./ Greely) finished in third place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:35.50. Freshman Britt Shaffer (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) finished in second place in the 100 meter high hurdles even with a time of 17.22, while fellow freshman Melissa Palombo (Endicott, N.Y./ Union-Endicott) finished in third place with a time of 18.58.

Sophomore Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./ Bishop Neumann) finished in third place in the long jump event with a distance of 15'10.25". Freshman Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kans./ Hayden) finished in second place in the javelin throw with a distance of 109'01" in her first collegiate meet.

The menUs team was led by sophomore Patrick Wright (Arlington, Texas, Trinity Valley), who finished third in the 400 meter dash time of 52.51. Senior Darrick Alford (Richmond, Va./ Douglas Freeman) finished third in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:08.05.

The womenUs track team from Frostburg State University and menUs track team from Susquehanna University both finished in first place in their respective meets.

Both teams will compete at the Roanoke College Invitational next Saturday.


MEN FINISH THIRD, WOMEN FOURTH IN ODAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS (2/27)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Lynchburg College's men's and women's indoor track teams both took first place at the Old Dominion Athletic Indoor Track Meet, hosted by Washington and Lee at VMI's Cormack Field House on Saturday afternoon. W&L's men placed third, while the women placed fourth.

Lynchburg (63 points) edged out Bridgewater (60) in the women's competition for first place. They were followed by Roanoke (50) in third place, Washington and Lee (24) in fourth, and Eastrern Mennonite (22) in fifth.

On the men's side the Hornets dominated their competition with 111 points. They were followed by Bridgewater (66 points) in second place and Washington and Lee (21) in third place. Eastern Mennonite and Roanoke tied for fourth place with 19 points apiece.

Bridgewater swept the women's honors as Shane Stevens captured ODAC Coach of the Year honors and Melissa Baker was named athlete of the year. Lynchburg similary swept the men's honores as Jack Toms was named ODAC Coach of the Year, while athlete of the year went to James Goss.

The Generals' women were led by senior Lisa Brennan, who finished second in the women's 800 run, with a time of 2:33.0 and third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:42.57. Sophomore Kathleen Moroney finished in third place in the 800 meter run wiht a time of 2:35.37. Junior Jill Kosch placed fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.64.

The men were paced by senior Marc Granger, who finished in second place at the shot put event with a distance of 40'10". Senior Darrick Alford finished in second place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:36.83. Senior Joe Bestic finished in third place in the 55 meter high hurdles event, with a time of 8.40.


M&W TRACK IMPRESS ACROSS TOWN (2/6)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's track teams represented themselves well against Division I competition at the VMI Winter Relays on Saturday afternoon.

The women were led by senior Lisa Brennan (Cape Vincent, N.Y./ Thousand Islands), who finished in 10th place in the 800-meter with a time of 2:33.60. Sophomore Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./ Hampton Bays) closely followed Brennan in that event, finishing in 13th place with a time of 2:36.40. Sophomore Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./ Bishop Neumann) finished 12th in the women's long jump with a mark of 15'6". She also placed 16th in the 55 meter dash with a time of 8.04 seconds.

The men were led by senior Marc Granger (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill), who finished sixth place in the shot put with a distance of 41'10". Junior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./ Hilton Head), finished in 20th place in the men's 55-meter dash with a time of 6.83. Senior Darrick Alford (Richmond, Va./ Douglas Freeman) continued to impress, finishing in 11th place in the 3,000 meter run, with a time of 9:20.10 and 16th place in the mile run with a time of 4:49.30.

The Generals will be in action again on Feb. 27, when they host the ODAC Championships at VMI's Cormack Field House.

 

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK SHOW GOOD STUFF AT DUCHARME RELAYS (1/30)

CARLISLE, Pa. -- The W&L men's and women's indoor track teams finished well at the DuCharme Relays at Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon. The results were tallied by team results and not by individuals.

The women were paced by their distace medley relay team that finished fourth with a combined time of 13:47.0. The 55-meter hurdles team finished in fifth place with time of :10.5. The 4x800-meter relay team finished in third place with a time of 10:24.4.

The men's team was led by their shot put team that finished in second place with a combined distance of 82'4". The 55-meter hurdles team finished in fifth place with a time of :18.1. The finishers were rounded out by the 4x800-meter relay team that finished in sixth place with a time of 8:50.5.

W&L will host the VMI Relays at Cormack Field House on Feb. 6.

 

BRENNAN, CASE, AND ALFORD PACE GENERALS AT LEBANON VALLEY(1/23)

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Washington and Lee's men's and women's indoor track and field teams continued their season on Saturday afternoon with fine performances at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational.

The women were paced by senior Lisa Brennan (Cape Vincent, N.Y./ Thousand Islands) and sophomore Wendy Case (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/ Greely), who finished first and second in the women's 1,500 meter run with respective times of 5:16.4 and 5:19.1 Senior Darrick Alford (Richmond, Va./ Douglas Freeman) led the men with a second place finish in the men's 1,500 meter run and a time of 4:24.7.

W&L sophomore Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./ Hampton Bays) came in third place in the women's 800-meter run,with a time of 2:38.2. Freshman Justin Novak (Fairfield, Conn./ Fairfield Prep) finished sixth in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.7.

Junior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./ Hilton Head) finished sixth in the men's 200-meter dash, with a time of 24.8 seconds. The Generals will travel to Carlisle, Pa. next Saturday to participate in the Dickinson College Invitational.
