NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the Division III Men's Scholar Athletes of the Year and the All-Academic honorees on Thursday, and four Washington and Lee athletes earned All-Academic laurels. The Generals were also named a USTFCCCA 2018 All-Academic Team.
Recent graduate MacKenzye Leroy (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis), rising senior Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton), and rising juniors Donovan Fiore (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler Prep Academy) and Shep Sims (Charleston, W.Va./Woodberry Forest School) each garnered the individual honor.
As a team, the Blue and White had a 3.36 overall grade-point average. W&L won the Indoor ODAC Championship this year and finished second at the outdoor conference meet. A total of 106 men's teams were recognized by the USTFCCCA and 408 individuals.
To qualify as an individual for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher and have met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national Top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national Top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
To be recognized as an All-Academic Team, a squad must accumulate a team GPA of at least 3.10.
Dhruvil Patel of North Central was the Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year, Mark Fairley of Central was the Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year, Will Daniels of Central was named the Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and Tobias Muellers of Williams garnered the Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
